How the conversion works

Gold is weighed in different units around the world, so the converter routes everything through grams as a common base. It first turns your input amount into grams, then converts those grams into every target unit. This keeps results exact and consistent no matter which pair you pick.

The reference weights are the internationally recognised values: one troy ounce is exactly 31.1034768 grams, one kilogram is 1,000 grams, and one standard (avoirdupois) ounce — the everyday ounce used for most goods — is exactly 28.349523125 grams.

Worked example

One troy ounce is 31.1034768 grams — about 9.7% heavier than a standard ounce (28.3495 g). Going the other way, a 1 kg gold bar is 1,000 grams, which is about 32.15 troy ounces but about 35.27 standard ounces. The all-units table shows all of these at once for whatever amount you enter, which makes the troy-vs-standard difference easy to see.

Common mistakes

The single most common mistake is confusing a troy ounce (used for precious metals, 31.1034768 g) with the everyday avoirdupois ounce (28.3495 g). Gold, silver, and other precious metals are always quoted per troy ounce — so an "ounce of gold" on a price chart is about 9.7% heavier than an ounce on a kitchen scale. When sizing physical purchases, double-check which ounce a dealer means.
